As far as blogs go; it seems that the internet is absolutely full of sites with copius amounts of information which makes, these individual sites and blogs less visited. I can only hope that I can use this site to share information and ask questions from other like minded members who might be interested in participating.
As a graduate from performing arts courses with a local acting school; I find myself drawn to sites like this in order to network with other like minded performing artists. While I don t actually consider myself to be a performing artist per se; as I rarely have the opportunity to promote myself within the industry or even ply my talents on camera, the opportunity just isn t available.
I still canvass the schools owner & operator as they are also acting as a casting director for background performers whenever a production takes place in the city. I can tell you that at times it almost seems a bit political as far as selecting from an available pool of talent, as usually the casting regulars get called up while many of the rest of us don t.
So why do I persist ???, I think its a question that we all know the answer to; the acting bug has bitten us all, the passion for performing arts runs in our blood and courses through our veins. We pursue one gig after another because the performing arts industry for most of us is more like a paid hobby, while for others its a career choice.
I still attend auditions out of town where Im unknown, just me, my talents and a headshot with an actors resume. Now with the new year apon us, Im left wondering where to from here ?, whats next ? I expect that I will pursue my interests through continuing education where industry insiders are able to offer a little career guidance as I try and promote myself. A talent is much like a surgeons scalpel, it needs to be sharpened regularly so that I can promote myself successfully with the skill and percision of a surgeon.
I will be looking forward to input from fellow performing artists so that they can share their experiences and offer a little advise as to what they would do in a simular situation. I will pose questions and look forward to a little feed back accordingly, as I will also try and offer information that others here will find useful or atleast interesting.
SO !!! what is If.net anyway ? who is promoting this site ? is it a group of performing artists who share a passion, or is there some affiliation with the performing arts industry through its casting directors and associates ? With the information we provide on here, is this a data base of talent whereby casting directors and talent agents can shop for talent ? If we do provide a demo reel on this site, how is this reel being used as far as promoting the talent ?
As the performing arts industry seems to have a greater presence in the U.S., just how does a Canadian performer break into the performing arts industry in the U.S. ? Do we shop for an agent first ?, attend auditions first ?, seek a working visa first ? attempt to apply for membership with an actors guild first ?, or is coming here considered to be an excellent start toward breaking into the industry by letting casting directors find us here ?
Well friends that will conclude my posting for today, as the new year starts to progress, I look forward to a more proactive approach to my participation on this site. Depending on the feedback, I will respond accordingly and look forward to enguaging others on here with some stimulating dialog on the performing arts industry. Thanks for coming by.
